Application for New License

The N.C. Money Transmitters Act (Act) requires that any business engaged in money transmission be licensed by the North Carolina Office of the Commissioner of Banks (NCCOB) as a money transmitter. There are several exemptions included within the Act.

All licensing applications must be submitted via the Nationwide Multistate Licensing System & Registry

License Determination or Exemption Request

If you want to know if your organization requires a money transmitter license or you would like to request a license exemption, please use the License Determination / Exemption Request form.

Renewal of an Existing License

The Money Transmitter license is perpetual; however, each licensee must go through an annual renewal period in NMLS to maintain use of the system. The renewal period opens on November 1st and ends on December 31st of each year. The NCCOB does not charge any renewal fees; however, the annual assessment must be paid for your renewal to be approved. The NMLS charges fees during the renewal period.
